IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION ON RECOUNT TEXT THROUGH COLLABORATIVE STRATEGY AT SECOND GRADE STUDENTS AT SMPN7 CIBAL IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/2015



ABSTRACT
This research aimed to knowing the improvement of students reading comprehension on recount text through collaborative strategy. Reading comprehension is related to how the readers understand the text by trying to combine his or her background knowledge with the text to know the message or the content of the text. collaborative strategy is an excellent technique for teaching students reading comprehension and building vocabulary and also working together cooperatively. In reading comprehension, the readers also have some problems that should be solved by the teachers by applying the collaborative strategy. The problems are the students are difficult to identify the language features of recount text, difficult to identify the generic structure of recount text, did not know how to read the text and the interest of students in learning reading comprehension was low and they were lack of reading.
The research design used is classroom action research. It was conducted in one cycle that consisted of four steps, namely: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subjects were 32 students of the second grade students at SMPN 7 Cibal in the accademic year 2014/2015. They were chosen as the subjects of the research based on the results of preliminary study. The data were collected through test and observation. Test was used to know and measure the students reading comprehension development. Observation sheet was used to know the process of teaching learning related to the used of collaborative strategy.
In analyzing the data the researcher used the criterion of success, it was 65. The results of the data analysis showed that collaborative strategy helps the students in improving reading comprehension on recount text. It can be seen from the students’ score that the students average score improved from 51,31 to 96,87 and the percentage of the students who passed the test improved from 51,31 % to 100%.
Based on the result of research above, it can be concluded that the use of collaborative strategy in reading comprehension especially in teaching recount text through collaborative strategy at the second grade students of SMPN 7 Cibal could improve the students reading comprehension on recount text.
