The objective of this research is to examine the correlation between vocabulary mastery and the students’ speaking skill at XI APH17 of Tourism High School SadarWisataRuteng in Academic Year 2016/2017.
This research is correlational study; correlation study is used to examine the relation between the independent variable to the dependent variable, in this research students’ vocabulary mastery as independent variable, meanwhile students’ speaking skill as dependent variable. The researcher provided test for two variables, first, it aimed to test the students’ vocabulary mastery, and the second test is to examine the students’ speaking skill, the subjects of the research were XI APH17 students at Tourism High School SadarWisataRuteng of 33 students, 11 male and 22 female.
Vocabulary always used in every skills of the language including speaking skill, speaking as one of the way to convey the meaning from the speaker to the counterpart orally, speaking means personal skill in expressing the idea. Without collection of the vocabularies someone cannot arrange the sentences to transfer the idea or message.
The research findings that the value of correlation between X-Y variables is rxy=0.853; and exists on 5% of level significant, and the coefficient of determination 92.3% vocabulary influenced the speaking skill (X influence Y), while the 7.7% speaking skill influenced by the other aspects (internal and external).
The researcher concludes that, there is strong correlation between vocabulary mastery and students’ speaking skill.
