(2) LANGUAGE CHOICE IN MIXED MARRIAGE FAMILY BETWEEN MANGGARAIAN AND JAVANESE IN MANGGARAI

This research aims at describing and analyzing the language choice and the factors of language choice in mixed marriage family between Manggaraian and Javanese in Manggarai. Mixed marriage can be simply defined as the marriage between two individuals from different region or even country in which the cultures, linguistics, religion backgrounds are appeared differently. Meanwhile, language choice refers to the deliberate choice of language made by a speaker in a given context. The problems of this research are (1) what languages the mixed marriage family choose in interaction and (2) what factors of choosing a language in the mixed marriage family are.
Descriptive qualitative research method was employed in the form of case study in which two families were involved as the subjects of this research. The observation, recording and interview were conducted as the instruments of the research. Meanwhile data reduction, data display and conclusion and verification were conducted in analyzing the data.
The findings show that the language choice in interaction in mixed marriage family between Manggaraian and Javanese are Indonesian, Manggaraian and Javanese language. Those languages are used by the mixed marriage families in interaction in the home domain. Indonesian language is spoken by all family members in the home domain. Manggaraian and Javanese language are used by the spouses when talking about particular topic and functions of interaction. The choice of language in mixed marriage families was affected by some factors of language choice such as participant, setting, topic and function.
It can be concluded that the phenomenon of language choice in mixed marriage family between Manggaraian and Javanese is affected by the factors of language choice proposed by Holmes such as participant, setting, topic and function.
